SEO is a form of marketing. Let me ask a counter question, is running a television commercial a form of manipulating the tv station? Good organic rankings are not possible without SEO. Blackhat SEO/spam may be considered unethical manipulation of the search engine.

No SEO is not Sleazy, It all about sharing: I help you and you help me. I think Google looks upon sites that help each other.

At the end of the day Google etc want to return the websites that are most relevent to the user, and by understanding how SEO works you’re halfway there. By stuffing your site full of key phrases just to rank well for that key phrase won’t work because Google can tell and will penalise you in rankings for your spammy attempts. If you have nicely written content that’s relevent to the searcher and perhaps has a few links from (non spammy) sites then you should do well

Changing keywords for the purpose of ranking is good but this shouldnt really ruin the design itself which is the most important part of a site.
